Two Types of Poker Celebrities. And Poker's Unsung Heroes.

Two Types of Poker Celebrities. And Poker's Unsung Heroes.

These days, there are two distinct types of "poker celebrities."

The first is:

Poker players whose tournament winnings (or public antics in the recent media spotlight on poker) have created "celebrity" status for them.

When Chris Ferguson won the 2000 World Series of Poker and brought home $1.5 Million, poker was just gaining a foothold on the media, with ESPN devoting a seasons worth of episodes to the WSOP that year. Then in 2003, from out of the blue a young man named Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP title, taking home $2.5 million, but mostly shattering the old paradigm of who a poker player was, and how much fun the game could be for just about anyone.

Since then, the media spotlight on poker has created celebrities from amongst its ranks.

This group includes such notables as Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Phil Hellmuth, Kathy Liebert, Daniel Negreanu, Jamie Gold, Jennifer Harman, Allen Cunningham, and Phil Ivey, to name just a very few.

The second group is:

Media celebrities who happen to play poker.

Once poker became "acceptable" by virtue of the attention it received from the media (now one could even argue that it's "cool"), celebrities came out of the woodwork. Some were "closet" poker players, having played since they were kids with their parents as family entertainment. Some just wanted to jump on the bandwagon of something that looked like it would be a fun way to spend their time and their hard-earned money.

This group includes such notables as Vince Van Patten (Co-Host for the televised World Poker Tour), Ben Affleck, Don Cheadle, James Woods, Matthew Perry, Shannon Elizabeth, Jason Alexande and Jennifer Tilly, to name just a very few.

But there is another group of "poker heroes."

These are the players who have been playing the game not just for years, but for decades. They've sought to make poker more acceptable in the public eye, and have devoted themselves to making the the poker community a community that someone would want to be a part of - even be proud to be a part of.

Some of them, including most notably Mike "Poker's Ambassador" Sexton and Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson, have gained public notoriety.

Most, however, are generally not thought of as celebrities, since their names and faces seldom appear on TV, and their names seldom grace the public media. They remain relatively unknown to the general public, although many, if not most, are well-known within the poker community.

They are the long-term ambassadors for the game, who have given of themselves in ways other than just sitting at the table. Some have made contributions to gaming laws. Others have introduced new games or new rules that made specific games better. Many have given charitably, extensively. They are poker's unsung heroes, and as such are worthy of mention.

This group includes such notables as Mike Caro, Linda Johnson, Phyllis Caro, Robert "Chipburner" Turner, Susie Isaacs, Lou Krieger, Marsha Waggoner, Kenna James, Barbara Enright and many, many more.

If you're reading this, and you belong to any of these three groups but your name is not included, you can be assured that there was no specific intent to your omission. This is written mostly to help others understand the distinctions between the two types of "celebrities" and the third group - the unsung heroes who will likely not achieve celebrity status, but have laid the foundation upon which those celebrities have built their public platform.

Meet Five "Poker Heroes"

You can meet five of the group of "poker heroes" by visiting www.FourQueensOfPoker.com. 2008 inaugural "Women in Poker Hall of Fame" Inductees Linda Johnson, Marsha Waggoner, Barbara Enright and Susie Isaacs are featured in an interview presented by Phyllis Caro and the International Poker Institute and featuring interviewer Jay Aaron.

The live teleconference / audio Webcast takes place on April 1st, 2008, and you can listen to the recording of this historic call any time afterward via downloadable MP3 audio file.

Meet Toby Leah Bochan: About.com's Poker Editor

Meet Toby Leah Bochan: About.com's Poker Editor

Toby Leah Bochan began playing poker with her parents at the ripe old age of seven, and she's still at it.

She ripened into an excellent player, and when she's not playing at the World Series of Poker, she plays home games, and travels to tournaments. Oh, and she teaches, too.

Toby Leah Bochan and Joe Hashem
Toby Leah Bochan and 2005 WSOP Champion Joseph Hashem

Toby is an exceptional writer, so when she's not winning at the tournament tables or cash games, she covers the world of poker as a journalist (she's been behind the keyboard at World Poker Tour events and has contributed to Woman Poker Player Magazine), and as a writer.

She's the author of the "Badass Girl's Guide to Poker" and its companion publication the "Badass Girl's Poker Party Kit," and contributed to a book of compiled writings titled "Women's Poker Night."

Toby has been the Editor of About.com's Guide to Poker for several years. During the month of March, 2007, she's been profiling women in poker. Shannon Elizabeth, Cyndy Violette, Clonie Gowen, Jennifer Harman, Annie Duke, Kathy Liebert and Barbara Enright are some of the phenomenal women who've been honoured by Toby's nod to "Women's History Month."

And as part of this month's blog entries at poker.about.com, we're honored that Toby has mentioned the "Four Queens of Poker" TeleWebinar presented by Phyllis Caro and featuring the 2008 inaugural Inductees into the "Women in Poker Hall of Fame."

Toby Leah Bochan is someone deserving of receiving the honor of being mentioned herself during this month's tribute to Women's History Month as one of poker's most notable women. Besides being a fun-loving player, through her writing and her role at About.com's Guide to Poker, she's a great ambassador for the game.

Poker Celebrity Gavin Griffin Makes an Unexpected Appearance at "All In for the Kids" Fundraiser for the Los Angeles Youth Network

Poker Celebrity Gavin Griffin Makes an Unexpected Appearance at "All In for the Kids" Fundraiser for the Los Angeles Youth Network

On Saturday evening, March 22, 2008, the Normandie Casino in Gardena, CA hosted "All In for the Kids," a poker tournament fundraiser for the Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN).

"All In for the Kids" Fundraiser for the Los Angeles Youth Network

LAYN gives shelter to homeless youth ages 12 to 17 - many of them runaways, offering in-house and referral services that results in more than 80% of the youth who exit the program live successfully with their families, in foster or group home placements, or independently. and nearly 90% of the kids who are in this group of success stories remain in stable settings, making LAYN a phenomenal success story in its own right.

Just over 60 players bought into the tournament for the $40 entry fee, and many of them exercised their option to continue playing with multiple re-buys at $20 each. All for a good cause!

During the evening, LAYN held a 50/50 cash raffle won by LAYN Board Member Lisa "I NEVER win anything!" Newell, who generously donated all of her winnings back to the organization.

Executive Host & Poker Room Manager Robert "Chipburner" Turner was the driving force on the Normandie Casino staff behind this successful event, which provided food and entertainment.

Los Angeles Youth Network Development Director Ryanne Plaisance and Development Coordinator Teissia Treynet (both relatively good poker players in their own right) graced the tournament table, sharing stories of the youth that LAYN has served while doing their best to take down their opponents.

The highlight of this event for many of the attendees was the unexpected participation of Gavin Griffin and Kristen Roberts, Gavin's lovely significant other. After talking with Gavin and Kristen, it's evident that they are truly genuine people who share a wonderful relationship.

At the ripe young age of 26 Gavin Griffin is the only professional poker player to have won tournaments at the World Series of Poker (2004 WSOP $3,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em), the European Poker Tour (EPT Season 3 Monte Carlo Grand Final) and the World Poker Tour (WPT Season 6 Borgata Poker Classic). Yet Gavin remains a down-to-earth, humble young man, seemingly unaffected as of yet by his newfound fame and fortune. His willingness to attend this small fundraising event at Lisa Newell's invitation is evidence of his humanity and his generosity.

Poker Great Gavin Griffin

All in all, the event was a great success, and everyone in attendance had lots of fun.

Most importantly, this was another opportunity for the poker community to give evidence of the generosity of many of its members, who have hearts and minds that are motivated by more than just winning at the tables.

Robert Turner, the International Poker Institute and the staff at LAYN are planning future poker tournament and poker education fundraisers, including a possible fundraising cruise in 2009. Check in at www.InsidePokerCentral.com for updates.

Managing Affiliate Programs

Managing Affiliate Programs

A recent post at Inside Poker Central was dedicated to the benefits of being an Independent Marketing Representative ("Affiliate" in the online world), and making referral commission income based on your ability to effectively promote other's products, services, events and membership programs.

And there's yet another way to profit from Affiliate Marketing, that's reserved for only a few of the best "people managers."

The position is referred to as an "Affiliate Manager," and it's not about doing Affiliate Marketing yourself. It's about managing an entrepreneur's or a company's Affiliate Program on behalf of that entrepreneur or company.

Affiliate Managers can be compensated by hourly wages, salaries, and/or by earning a portion of the Affiliate Income that can be directly traced to their performance as a manager of the Affiliate Program and the team of Affiliates.

How much you might expect to earn will depend on everything from your experience in managing people and in dealing with the online technologies associated with managing any particular Affiliate Program, to how much time is expected of you, to how many Affiliates are in the program, to how much income you help generate or the amount by which you increase revenue by virtue of your management of the Affiliate Program.

In essence, there are four basic duties of an Affiliate Manager:

1. Find qualified affiliates (“independent marketers").

This is an ongoing process, and there is often an initial “push” that needs to happen to get the Affiliate program moving more swiftly if it's new or needs a boost.

2. Consistently teaching and training affiliates to make more money by promoting more of the entrepreneur's or company's products, services, enrollments, etc. more often.

Some Affiliate Managers do their training "live" via teleconferencing and/or Webinars. Affiliate Managers are often called upon to develop and do their own training, but other experts can be called upon to add value to an in-house training program."

Much training can be automated, but in order to make this happen there is time early in the process that must be devoted to set-up, and then time that must be devoted to keeping up with automating the training process as new things are added.

3. Creating and maintaining an Affiliate “resource center.”

As with automated training, once built, an Affiliate Center should run automatically, but some time will need to be devoted to keeping it updated and current.

4. Consistently creating ideas for new ways to promote.

Affiliate Managers must often follow the promotional schedule created by other people in their organization who are responsible for marketing. But a good Affiliate Manager will also be suggesting and creating new promotional opportunities based on upcoming events, “holiday” and “special event (e.g. the World Series of Poker in the poker world) promotions, etc., in order to keep up the energy for Affiliates throughout the calendar year.

For many Affiliate Managers, thinking up, developing, and managing creative promotions is one of the most fun and rewarding parts of playing this role.

Although much is happening in the poker world because of its recent rise in popularity, there remain rather few opportunities to become an Affiliate Manager. With changes in the law regarding online gaming / poker, there are many fewer opportunities to become an Affiliate Manager for those kinds of companies.

This post is not without a self-serving purpose…

As of 18 March, 2008, Inside Poker Central, the International Poker Institute and the International Poker Education Network are currently seeking a highly motivated Affiliate Manager to put together a team of Affiliates to promote "virtual" and on-site poker education and entertainment products, services, events and membership programs.

This program is unique in that it represents an opportunity for poker affiliates and other Affiliate Marketers to promote non-gaming, non-gambling poker-related products and services, for which there is currently little competition in the marketplace, making this a desirable add-on to what poker Affiliates and Affiliate Marketers are already promoting.

Visit www.My-IPCentral.com/affiliates for more information or to apply for this exciting opportunity.

Affiliate Marketing and Poker Education

Affiliate Marketing and Poker Education

Independent Marketing Associates who generate commission-based referral income by promoting online (Internet-based) products, services, event and membership-program enrollments, etc. are commonly referred to as "Affiliates."

The process of promoting other people's and other businesses' products, services etc. for the purpose of receiving a referral commission is commonly called (in the Internet / online world) "Affiliate Marketing."

Those who enroll as Independent Marketing "Affiliates" in any referral marketing program have the right (as defined in each unique vendor's "Affiliate Agreement) to promote products, services, event, memberships, and more using offline print and electronic means, and online means such as Web site text links and graphic banners, article marketing, press releases, e-zine articles, e-mail broadcasts, and more.

When someone uses an "Affiliates" electronic link to visit a vendor, the vendor's online software tracks the visitor, giving credit for the referral to the appropriate Affiliate.

Sometimes vendors pay referral commissions simply for the tracked visit to their site, because they know that out of any given number of prospects who visit, a certain percentage will become customers, clients, patients or students. In most cases, however, vendors pay an Affiliate referral commission only when a referred visitor makes an actual purchase.

Some of the biggest online sellers (including Amazon.com - one of the very first to pay referral commissions for tracked sales - and PayPal, as only two of the hundreds or thousands of examples) reward others for recommending purchases at their sites that can be tracked to individuals and other companies that have enrolled in their "affiliate" referral program.

Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

Many - if not most - of these more prominent companies pay relatively small commissions (either small percentages of purchase value or small per-transaction fees), and have very tight deadlines within which they credit a sale - some time-frames as short as during a single visit only, meaning that if you are the referring party and your referred visitor does not purchase immediately after following your tracked referral link, you don't get a commission on a sale made to that same person even if s/he returns on buy on the same day.

However, there are many, many marketers, and affiliate networks that have multiple vendors, which pay some wonderfully high fees - as much as up to 100% OR MORE of the purchase price - to the referring party, and do so for the trackable life of the referred party - in some cases many years after the initial visit. (Why would a marketer pay 100% or more of their sale to the referring party? If you know or can figure it out, submit a reply to this blog post, and I'll use correct answers in a future post.)

Affiliate Marketing is an exceptional, legitimate means by which anyone - including YOU - can make at least a small, supplemental amount of money, either in one short burst, or on an ongoing basis. For those who "stick with the program," Affiliate Marketing income can expand over time into an amount that could replace - and even greatly exceed - your current income.

One of the major benefits of Affiliate Marketing is that you as a promoting Affiliate are simply referring others to another vendor. THAT VENDOR is responsible for doing the final marketing pitch, making the final sale, handling the customer finances, delivering the products and/or services, and providing all of the ongoing customer service.

Once you've done your work to drive visitors to the vendor's sales Web page or site, you COULD consider your work done, and then just sit back and collect your referral commission payments.

Those Affiliates who do even more, however - who communicate in an ongoing fashion with their referred prospects, and provide their own follow-up and customer service, including, for example, training their referred buyers how to use the vendor's products or services - are the really big-money earners.

Once you know that you wish to earn money as an Affiliate Marketer by promoting one or more products or services, you must decide what you wish to market.

Of course, you want to select products, services, events, etc. that are legal, and that fall within your scope of personal ethics and morals.

After that, you'll very likely find one or more products and services that you can promote that are in harmony with one or more of your personal passions. Or products and services that address the needs of your industry. Or that meet a specific group of people's expressed desires.

A good place to begin looking for products, services and membership programs to promote is the CLICKBANK MarketPlace. (The link you click here will take you to the page for people or businesses that want to use ClickBank to market their own products or services using ClickBank's cadre of registered Affiliates.) Just click on the "Promote Products" tab to search the ClickBank Marketplace and to sign up as a Clickbank Affiliate.

So what's the relevance of posting this article on "Poker Central?"

CLICK HERE to read another post about how to earn money as an "Affiliate Manager" for an individual or a company that needs someone to recruit, train and manage others to promote their products, services, events or membership programs as Independent Marketing Affiliates.

You can earn money as either an Affiliate Marketer or (in some cases) as an Affiliate Manager for poker-related gaming sites and/or other poker-related product and service providers.

The International Poker Education Network and the International Poker Institute (producers of non-gaming "virtual" and on-site poker education and entertainment products, services, events and membership programs) are jointly seeking Independent Marketing Affiliates and a highly motivated Affiliate Manager. Visit www.My-IPCentral.com/affiliates to learn more or to apply.
